Single handing the hiltless or katana is also effective if you prefer a shield, as the moveset for katanas is very versatile, somewhat like lighter straight swords but with better reach. Dual wielding two uchigatanas actually makes for faster attacks if you alternate left and right. I'd really only recommend Tearing if you are just going to breeze through quickly and not focus on high levels due to Tearing being easier to access.
