That is a good question. According to a sheet, that gives production numbers made each year, for each Model 39A made from 1952 to 1975. According to your gun, someone miscounted. Or one of the other special runs, used the same serial numbers. CHP357. It's my understanding that Marlin did not begin "manufacturing" the 39A First Variation in 1939. They began "manufacturing" it in 1938 (some say late 37) for "release" to the public in 1939. They most definitely were manufacturing First Variations in 1939 but by that time were probably well into the 4 digit serial number range.
