And the appearance of the Signalis logo in the artifact ending is a direct meta intrusion which goes beyond just Elster's (one or collective) self-awareness, which to me seems to represent the end of the ritual commenced at the start of the game. So the presence of the player has to figure within the story in a more than symbolic manner imo.
