Overall, the 444 Marlin is a slightly flatter shooting cartridge than the 450 Bushmaster is. At 150 yards the 444 drops 2.4 inches, whereas the Bushmaster drops about 2.9 inches. At 300 yards, drop is 15.8″ and 18.8″ respectively. The 444 Marlin drops only slightly less than the 450 Bushmaster and is therefore flatter shooting.

Feb 13, 2023 · The 444 will throw a 240gr bullet at 2400 fps. The 45-70 can throw a 250gr bullet at 2400 fps. So they're potentially very similar with lighter bullets. But for heavy bullets, there's a big difference. Heavier bullets for both calibers need to be seated deeper into the cases, reducing the available space for powder.

Typical 45-70 ballistics with modern factory ammo are a 300gr bullet at 2,350fps (3,678 ft-lbs), a 325gr bullet at 2,050fps (3,032 ft-lbs), and a 405gr bullet at 1,330fps (1,591 ft-lbs). The .45-70 Govt is very effective out to around 150 yards with minimal bullet drop, but it’s capable of great accuracy and longer range shooting as well.

My favorite load for my 45-70 has been to use Sierra 300 gn JHP, over 48.7 gns of IMR4198,and CCI 200 primers: (2100 fps per the Hornady manual): I get great accuracy with these, and great knock down power. I am now out of the IMR4198, and unable to locate any ,,,,Distance dictates the .35 Whelen in my opinion. The .444 is a niche cartridge for which ammo can be hard to find and expensive. The 45-70 cartridge had been dormant and all but unused since the 1890's, but Marlin introduced a modern version of the 1895 in 1972 chambered for 45-70 with plans of dropping the 444. But bullet and ammo makers did eventually get around to producing better 44 caliber bullets and the 444 refuses to completely die.
